U6 Soccer Drills – The basic skills
If you hear word “kids”, you will be imagining about crowd situation, shrieking, and very nasty situation, isn’t it? But yeah that is kids. They don’t care about the situations around.
Need an extra patient and effort to teach kids. Coaching U6 soccer players should be fun, give them the opportunity to play soccer with fun. They only know play, play, and play. Teach them about basic rule of soccer. So they play soccer with rule instead of brutal and not restrain. It is important to introduce them about how to kick the ball, throw-in, free kick, so they know how to do it, and it is as a foundation ability to play soccer.
How to kick the ball (passing, shooting, and dribbling), heading, and trapping is the basic skill to play soccer. Those are the important skills to teach in U6 soccer drills.
First is how to kick; passing, shooting, and dribbling is in this section. For U 6 soccer drills, have your kids players to kick the ball anywhere they want without target mark. In this section you only want to know how correct they do it, but not how accurate they kick. And if there are some mistakes, advise them with some joke and motivate them. After it done, you can add some target marks, then have them kick the ball to that mark or you can order them to kick the ball to teammate at far distance. It is for train them the accuracy.
Teaching heading in U6 soccer drills is very hard to be done at the first time. You will see many mistakes. It is because they have not good body coordination yet. But time after time it will work fine. You can throw the ball to the head and order them to head the ball back to you.
Trapping, what an important skill is it? Trapping is the skill to stop the ball so the player gain possession of the ball and they have an opportunity to make a score. If the player have not well in trapping, the team will difficult to have an opportunity to attack. So more possession, and more the team have opportunity to make score. But it is not absolute, many possibility may happen. How to teach it? You pass the ball to the player, and order them to stop it with foot, chest, head, except hand. You can add more variation such as long pass, trough pass, and strong pass with some variation angle.
Before you train them it is better if you consider use the ball with suitable size according their age. Size 3 is suitable for U6 soccer drills. This is the smallest balls and generally used for children under the age of 8. It has 23-24 inches in circumference and weigh between 11-12 ounces. Don’t use ball for advance soccer player because it is not suit for them also it is too heavy for kids and really not effective.
Fun training session is great idea in U6 soccer drills.
