Understanding Soccer Positions
Now we will learn about soccer positions. As you know soccer is a team sport which team work is the key. Knowing each position will help the beginner deeply knowing about it. There are four basic soccer positions
Goalkeeper
Goalkeeper is a vital role; he has big responsibility to keep the goal clean. Goalkeeper is the only player allowed to touch the ball with his hand. But the rule is only in his penalty box and the goalkeeper can’t touch the ball with his hands when the ball comes from the foot passing of his teammate.
Defenders
Defenders divided into several kinds there are fullback (R / L), center back, libero / sweeper. Fullback usually has a good speed for facing with opponent’s winger who has good speed too. Center back is usually big and has good heading skill. The sweeper/libero is a back up for the center backs and is responsible for distributing the ball to midfielder.

Midfielders
Midfielder is the vital soccer positions. The team will be very good if you have a great midfielder. Why? Because he is the machine or the attack creator. Midfielder itself is divided into right/left midfielder (RM / LM), attacking midfielder (AM), defensive midfielder (DM), center midfielder (CM), and playmaker (PM). RM/LM is a player that attacks on the wing who usually has great speed and dribbling, crossing, too. AM is a midfielder who carried out the attack in the middle of the field, this player should have great vision, dribbling, passing and long shoot. DM is a player who became the first fortress defense when attacked by opposite team; this player has a good tackling, good heading and also can read the opponent’s game style. CM acts as the player who distributes the ball more than dribbling the ball. PM is the same as AM but it is usually midfielder who become the soul of the team such as F. Totti and S. Gerrard.
Strikers
Strikers or forwards is divided into central forward (CF), second striker (ST), and right/left winger (RWG/LWG). CF usually acts as target the man who has great heading and a good placement positions. ST is more aggressive and acts as a supporter of the CF. RWF / LWF has the same function with RM / LM.
Those are some of the soccer positions that must be understood by a beginner soccer player. You know that soccer is the beautiful game to play and it is not difficult to understand the rule.
