Soccer Drills Defense

Defense is the most important thing in soccer. Defense is vital sector, it determines your teams lose or win. The following is the important thing you must to do in soccer drills defense:

  1. Make your position oneself between the goal and the opponent in one zone.
  2. Don’t use offside trap when strive against professionals as it sometime backfires.
  3. Remain goal-side of the opponent.
  4. Use dribbling attacker as a backup while always screening a potential shot. This to better assess by the goalkeeper where the shot on goal will go.
  5. After the dribbler has lost of the ball, the player should be able to tackle it.
  6. When defending against a cross, in soccer drills defense, have the defenders on positioning oneself to always remain approximately goal side of the ball. This is such as an attempted tackle. By being approximately goal side, it is meant that an effective cross from near of the goal line will be pulled back towards the penalty spot and far from the goalkeeper. The defender should be compensating this angle.

Note: When one of the defender is chasing a dribbling opponent in front of the goal, that defender is out of position. This is what not to do in soccer drills defense:

  1. Only watch the ball when opposing a dribbling attacker not watch the attacker’s feet, a good dribbler is tricky.
  2. Too far up field that recovery to a proper defensive position.
  3. Tackling the ball under control of the dribbler when there is no back up defender. This situation is dangerous, when attempting to dislodge the ball via slide tackle. This is good if accomplished, but if missed, a dangerous situation will occurred, and a defender on the ground is useless. The blame will falls upon the defender on the ground if goal is scored.
  4. Covering for another out of position defender and leaving your own zone unprotected. But the exception would be to restrain a goal when an emergency situation occurred.

Usually soccer training is conducted by focusing the training practice on attacking such as shooting drills, dribbling drill, free kick, corner kick. But soccer drills defense is important too. I have seen professional players, when they attempt to dislodge tackle the ball in and around the front of the goal post, miss the tackle and then often time the goal scored.
